First Cav: Impressions of a Skytrooper
Audio Item Number: 2770AU2659
  • Not Available
  • NOT DIGITIZED
Bill Ellis, a rifleman with the 1st Air Cavalry Division, represents soldiers at the foxhole level- where dirt and weariness, fighting, and dying are as commonplace as the raw courage and spirit that typify these magnificent young men. For all men, the sights and sounds of combat make vivd impressions; Bill has preserved his in song.

First Cav traces the FIRST TEAM's history, and is one of the first modern songs written about the entire division.

It once was said that combat is ninety per cent boredom and ten per cent terror. Bill captures the gut-grabbing feeling of battle in Firefight. The "snap" of Russian AK-47s and the line "Flip your iron to rock 'n' roll" (M-16 on full automatic) will stir a veteran's memories.

Inherent in the harships of combat are misery and loneliness- the theme of Grunt, whose lyrics reflect the changing vocabulary of war. "Humped a click" has replaced "marched a mile," the "Log Bird"- the logistics helicopter that brings food and water, and mail to units scattered far from roads- has replaced the old kitchen truck.

Finally, for every man in Vietnam there comes a day when it's all over, when that big jet flies him home. All the yearning the soldier feels as he counts the days until he's "back in the world" comes through in the haunting melody Freedom Bird.

Although these songs were written about the Skytrooper of the 1st Air Cavalry, they eloquently tell the story of all the gallant men who have fought in Vietnam... and to them this record is dedicated.

[Number of Pages: 0]
A unique insight to the Vietnam experience. Witness the Vietnam War, its roots, its battles, it heroes and the price paid in the name of freedom. This stunning, detailed collection shows the war with heartbreaking realism. It looks at troubling questions about America's justification for the conflict, the horror of jungle warfare and the human calamity of the war. Ultimately, it profiles the courage of the soldiers who put their lives on the line in the name o patriotism. In addition to the outstanding color action footage in the documentary, we have eyewitness interviews ranging from accounts of policy makers in Washington to remembrances of 'grunts' who were humping the boonies trying to survive a '65 and a wakeup' for a trip home o the 'freedom bird'. Since Robert McNamara's confession won an Oscar, many of the policy makers are willing to speak on the record for the first time. This timely DVD set features rare archival footage and photographs and over 5 hours of captivating interviews. (from DVD cover)

Combat veterans of the Vietnam War report it as they experienced it. On September 4, 1970, a large group of Vietnam combat veterans began a four-day 100-mile march from Morristown, New Jersey to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, to protest U. S. war policies in Southeast Asia. They wore their battle attire and carried plastic M-16's. In towns en route they re-enacted their own brutal treatment of Vietnamese civilians through frightening simulations of harassment and interrogation. Along the march route they encountered outspoken spectators and counter-demonstrations, and slept in fields loaned by farmers and Quaker groups. They talked of their war experiences and why they had been driven to speak out as 'different sons'. On the fourth day, they gathered with amputees from the Valley Forge Army Hospital and thousands of sympathizers at a final ceremony in which they broke their guns in half and changed 'Peace, Now!' The nonprofit film was independently produced by Bowling Green Films, Inc., with the assistance of many volunteer professionals and companies in New York Film Industry For Peace. The film debuted at the Museum of Modern Art and was widely seen in film festivals in the U. S. and Europe, by fraternal, labor, church, and military organizations, as well as on college campuses and public and cable television stations. The film was written and directed by Jack Ofield, and produced by Jack Ofield and Robert J. Sann.
