Description The Jackson-Desbarats Study contains information collected from refugees by University of California at Berkeley professor Dr. Karl D. Jackson and Jacqueline Desbarats related to human rights violations in post-war Vietnam and post-resettlement migration patterns of refugees (particularly Vietnamese) in the United States.

The first series, General Files, contains material about project genesis, implementation, and final results.

The second series, Interviews and Completed Vietnamese Resettlement Questionnaires, contains the collected interview data used for their studies and papers. The questionnaire asked for reasons the Vietnamese immigrated to the United States as well as the reasons they move within the United States, and was broken down into the following sections:

Scope/Content There are 16 linear feet of material in the Jackson-Desbarats Study collection. The General Files contain 3 linear feet of material, most of which is in English. The Interviews and Completed Vietnamese Resettlement Questionnaires contains 13 linear feet of material, most of which is in Vietnamese with some French, Korean, Chinese, English, and Cambodian. Most of the interviews were done anonymously and are not in any particular organization. A blank sheet of paper separates interviews within each folder. The material is in good condition.

A scrapbook of collected materials documents Robert Lafoon's service with DASPO. Photographs make up the bulk of the scrapbook, but it also contains printed documents, press passes, newspaper photographs, etc. Published photos by Lafoon are represented in the Garrison newsletter and VFW magazine (May 1966). A book, Images of a Lengthy War, contains photos by Lafoon and other DASPO photographers. For preservation of the materials, the scrapbook has been disassembled, and the items kept in original order in acid-free folders.

The collection consists of approximately one linear foot of artifacts, newspapers, clippings, periodicals, newsletters, military records, orientation to Vietnam information, Chieu Hoi leaflets, correspondence, posters, a map, and various ephemera documenting Marilyn Huepers Baierlipp's service as a U.S. Army nurse with the 27th Surgical Hospital at Chu Lai from 20 March 1969 to 13 March 1970.

Items of note include a large poster used by a boyfriend of Baierlipp to write her a letter in a series of installments. The installments were written between April 2 and April 6, 1969.

Over 2 linear feet of maps, photographs, newspaper and magazine clippings, periodicals, and military artifacts document Anthony G. Borra's service in the United States Air Force from 1962 to 1970, particularly the 22 months he spent in Southeast Asia with the 772nd Tactical Airlift Squadron (Philippines at both Mac Tan and Clark Air Force Base) and with the 463rd Tactical Airlift (Saigon and Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam). Items of note in this collection include a brass vase made from a 105mm shell and a 1992 Air Force health study on herbicides.

Approximately 11 linear feet of documents, photographs, slides, newsletters, newspapers, periodicals, museum objects, and microfiche donated to the archive by Mike Law and other members of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association (VHPA). The collection is arranged into three series of materials. First is official VHPA business papers, including correspondence, executive council meeting minutes, membership reports, and reunion planning materials. The second series of materials is incoming correspondence from individual members. This correspondence contains personal narratives about individual members' service in Vietnam, and in many cases includes copies of historical documents from each member’s own unit and/or their research such as reports (e.g. after action, operational-lessons learned, combat damage analysis); directories; event programs; unit histories (e.g. 18th Corps Aviation Company “Green Delta” (1971-1973); rosters; flight school materials; articles and clippings; artifacts; photographs; slides; calling cards; DOD certificates of vaccination; helicopter flight test guides; synthetic flight training system information/operation guides; instrument procedure guides; helicopter regulation questions; selective service notices of classification; military orders; certificates; and firsthand accounts. The third series is additional material accumulated by Mike Law from his involvment in VHPA business or materials sourced from VHPA members. These materials include a recording of Joe Galloway speaking at the 2000 VHPA reunion; emails containing the text of Galloway’s remarks; crests given to the VHPA by Australian Helicopter Pilots; service records; obituaries; flyers and pamphlets; maps; moving images; yearbooks; books; research materials for the 1994 VHPA membership Directory; and a booklet detailing insignia items of the 192nd Assault Helicopter Company (1966-1972). The materials are dated 1954-2022.



The collection also includes training materials donated to the archive by William J. Fitzgerald. The training materials are booklets from the United States Army Primary Helicopter School at Fort Wolters, Texas.

Over two linear feet of correspondence, photographs and slides, military administrative documents, award certificates, unpublished manuscripts, magazine clippings, video tapes and other material document the production of the documentary film project CO VAN: The American Military Advisor in Vietnam. Correspondence includes letters sent to Elliott by former advisors, including Generals Norman Schwartzkopf and Colin Powell, about possible participation in the film. Photographs and slides document a variety of military and humanitarian activities in Vietnam from 1963-1969 and a twentieth anniversary commemorative event honoring Southeast Asian allies held in 1995. Military administrative documents include Orders of Battle for MACV advisory teams in Southeast Asia from 1954 to 1975. Unpublished manuscripts include personal accounts written by advisors and ARVN officers about their experiences in Vietnam. The collection consists of research materials accumulated by James G. Zumwalt for his book Bare Feet, Iron Will and for a research project funded by the Cantigny First Division Foundation examining the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong (National Liberation Front) perspectives in engagements with the 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One) and the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (Blackhorse Regiment) between 1965-1972. The materials include memos and correspondence; project proposals; reference materials; budgets and invoices; notes; operational histories; photographs and images; articles and clippings; question lists; interview transcripts; and after action reports. Items of note in this material include audio tape recordings of interviews that James Zumwalt conducted with North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong (National Liberation Front) veterans of the Vietnam War. Also included are various other writings by James Zumwalt or his father Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt, Jr., as well as other individuals' writings sent to James Zumwalt for his feedback. The materials are dated 1965-1968, 1972, 1979, 1986-2004, and 2010-2012.

Less than one linear foot of documents, and research material regarding Malaya, strategic hamlets, and Vietnamese villages from Peoples' Master of Arts thesis, camcorder video tapes, maps, books, negatives from a trip to Vietnam made by Peoples in 2000, 2 CD-ROMs (173rd Infantry Brigade Reunion and a recorded radio transmission from a helicopter in Vietnam in 1967), artifacts (shoulder insignia), and a program from 173rd Airborne Brigade Reunion in Ft. Worth, TX, in 2001. In addition, this collection contains of a record album consists of Bob Hopes' recorded comedic performances at U.S. military bases in Thailand, Guam, Okinawa, Vietnam, etc. It features Janis Paige, Anita Bryant, Jerry Colonna, as well as Jill St. John as a special guest star and Alex Dreier as a narrator. This album was recorded in 1964 and distributed by PYE RECORDS in 1965.
