Operation Little Lift
Moving Image Item Number: 1390VI1633
Color film of Operation Little Lift (200-1296-68/VN). Operation Little Lift was the relocation of an orphanage in Vietnam. Note the "People Pod" underneath the CH-54 Tarhe.
--------
Motion Picture Caption Sheet, DASPO Photo Team "C"
Cameramen: SP4 Charles W. Abbott ; SP4 John E. Sandri
Operation Little Lift was initiated by WO-3 William Powers, 273rd Aviation Company, Civic Action Officer, through weekly visits to the An Phuong Orphanage in Vung Tau. WO-3 Powers discussed the project with Father Que, head Priest of the orphanage.
The orphans from throughout the Mekong Delta, and along the Cambodia border, have been living under constant threat of the Viet Cong (VC) recruiters and kidnappers. The children were transported by water to Vinh Long and brought to Vung Tau aboard a CH-47 Chinook helicopter and a CH-54 Flying Crane (this is the only "People Pod" being utilized by the U.S. Army at present.)
The airlift was made by the 147th Aviation Support Helicopter Company and the 273rd Heavy Crane Company. Both companies are under the support of the 22nd Combat Support Battalion.
The footage depicts elements of the 53rd General Support Group aiding in the transportation of approx 65 Vietnamese children (orphans).

Captured Viet Cong footage
Moving Image Item Number: 1390VI1634
Black and white captured Viet Cong footage obtained from a Mobile Photo Lab Group. Film appears to have been made in North Vietnam to give the Viet Cong a boost. This film shows troop and equipment movements, the shooting down and capture of an American Air Force Pilot(s). The original film was supposedly sent to the Pentagon. Captured Viet Cong footage. During our assignments we 'bargained' with others that may have had items of interest. Since we carried different types of color film, it became a great 'bargaining chip.' On one of my assignments, I ran across a 'Mobil Photo Lab Group' that had obtained a copy of this captured film. It appears to be a film made by North vietnam, to give the Viet Cong a boost, that they can win the war. It shows troop and equipment movements, the shooting down and capture of an American Air Force Pilot(s). this film copy is inthe negative format and if it is transferred to digital format, one might be able to create a positive format. I was told that the original was sent to the Pentagon, but the Photo Lab kept a copy for their records. I was able to obtain a copy by offering several rolls of 16mm color Motion Picture film. The copy was made on a special film base (I do not recall what it is called), but it is very thin, but has some strength to it. I would still be cautious when handling and threading it in a projector. It is a very interesting film. I would hope that the captured pilot(s) were later released rather than died in the horrific POW prisons of North Vietnam.'

Kodachrome II 16mm motion picture film
Museum Object Item Number: 1390museum1349
These seven - 100 foot rolls (camera spool) of Kodachrome II motion picture film, are also from the actual stock that was issued. Expiration date is also 'June/68'. They have an exposure index of 25, and were for outdoor scenes (sunlight). A Wratten #85 filter was to be used for proper color balance. When I first arrived at DASPO/Pacific (Department of the Army Special Photographic Office), we were using the Bell & Howell (B&H), 35mm Motion Picture Camera (referred to as the EYEMO). 100 foot rolls of 35mm film were used in these cameras. They were 'spring/hand wound motors'. Also, we used the B&H 16mm Motion Picture Cameras (referred to as the FILMO). 100 foot rolls of 16mm film were used in these cameras. They were 'spring/hand wound motors'. Within a year, we received more updated 16mm Motion Picture Cameras (Arriflex BL, and the Arriflex 16S). They were much lighter, and with better lenses. Also battery operated, which we used with rechargable 'battery belts'.

Kodak Vericolor II Professional Type S color negative film
Museum Object Item Number: 1390museum1350
These seven rolls of Kodak Vericolor II Professional, Type S, Color negative film are from actual stock that we were issued to the DASPO (Department of the Army Special Photographic Office) Still Photographers. Note expiration date Feb/82. This film was issued to the Still Photographers at the time they were using the twin lens-reflex cameras. With this type of film, a 2.25 x 2.25 negative was produced. It is also known as 120, or 220 film. A 120 roll would cover (12) exposures. The U.S. Army wanted the 2.25 x 2.25 film for file records. As better film emulsions became available with the 35 mm format, some of the Still Photographers would photograph with 35mm still cameras. Many Army Still Photographers carried both types of cameras and film. Kodak has enhanced the emulsion and offers faster speeds of this film. It is still 'the' film choice, when photographing studio or outside subjects.
