Operation Wheeler was characterized by battalion size combat assaults of the high ground west of Tam Ky, Quang Nam Province, RVN. On 16 September 1967, C Company, 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division moved towards the high ground of Tam Ky. After reaching their position, they rested, were resupplied with rations and water and established an observation post. In this sequence of photos, the men can be seen moving to their company command post, resting, playing cards and observing enemy activity. FLYAWAY PACK (Field Recovery) The recovery section of the 56th Transportation Company (ADS), based in Tan Son Nhut, dispatched and used a CH-47 Chinook helicopter to recover a UH-1C helicopter gunship belonging to the 9th Infantry Division. The UH1C was shot down near Tan An City, in the Mekong Delta. After having a hard landing in a rice field, the crew immediately rigged the Huey for recovery. There were no injuries and all personnel were safely evacuated. In this photo Downed UH1C and its crew are protected by other airborne and ground vehicles while they prepare the gunship for air lift evacuation back to the base camp. Photo by Robert C. Army Contact Sheet that goes with inclosed captions dated 28 Feb 1969 titled 'Combat Operation of the 1st Inf. Div. Photos by SP5 Bryan K. Grigsby 'DASPO' On 28 February 1969, 'B' Co., 2nd BN., 18th Inf., 1st Inf. Div., took part in a sweep of their units area of operation (AO), located approx 12 kilometers east of the city of Saigon, RVN. Acting as a 'blocking force,' the company attempted to prevent the enemy forces encountered earlier in the day from getting away. During the operation captured enemy personnel effects, including maps and papers were examined and non-essential intelligence items were destroyed. When thearea was considered secure 'B' Company was air-lifted via Huey helicopter, from the AO and flown back to their base camp for 'hot chow.' Roll Three 1. Slate. 2-5. Members of 'B' Company enjoy hot chow after being in the field. 6-12. Not exposed.

A radio operator (RTO) rests against a tree at the end of a sweep outside the Long Binh Combat Base. He is a member of 2nd Platoon, B Company, 2nd Batallion, 18th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division. This photograph is one of the few times I put down my 'military camera' and recorded a moment with my own personal camera. It is part of a small number of images I shot during my Army career that I still like.

Eastman Ektachrome commercial film

One - 100 foot roll (camera spool), of Eastman Ektachrome Commercial Film Type 7255 is balanced for 3200 kelvin (k). It was used for indoor filming under photo flood lamps, balanced for the 3200k. It is also from the actual stock that we were issued. When I first arrived to DASPO (Department of Army Special Photographic Office) Pacific, we were using the Bell & Howell (B&H), 35 mm Motion Picture Camera (EYEMO). 100 foot rolls of 35mm film were used in these cameras. Also, we used the B&H 16mm Motion Picture Cameras. Within a year, we received more updated 16mm Motion Picture Cameras (Arriflex BL & 16S), which were much lighter, and with better lenses.

On November 7, 1986 former DASPO member Harry Breedlove was honored by the United States Army in a ceremony held at the Headquarters of the 55th Combat Photo Company at Fort Meade, Maryland. Breedlove (center) is seen holding a framed copy of his award winning photograph that was used as the model for a special commerative Vietnam medal from the United States Mint (also included in the framed award). The 55th Combat Photo Company is a direct descendant of the Department of the Army Special Photo Office (DASPO). Breedlove had to fight for recognition of his photo being the inspiration for the special Vietnam medal. See additional NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS IN GRIGSBY COLLECTION. Left to right: Colonel ??? Army Contact Sheet that goes with inclosed captions dated 28 Feb 1969 titled 'Combat Operation of the 1st Inf. Div. Photos by SP5 Bryan K. Grigsby 'DASPO' On 28 February 1969, 'B' Co., 2nd BN., 18th Inf., 1st Inf. Div., took part in a sweep of their units area of operation (AO), located approx 12 kilometers east of the city of Saigon, RVN. Acting as a 'blocking force,' the company attempted to prevent the enemy forces encountered earlier in the day from getting away. During the operation captured enemy personnel effects, including maps and papers were examined and non-essential intelligence items were destroyed. When thearea was considered secure 'B' Company was air-lifted via Huey helicopter, from the AO and flown back to their base camp for 'hot chow.' Roll Two 1. Slate. 2-5. Members of the 2nd PLT move out after receiving orders to be removed from the area. 6. Members of 'B' Company wait beside a deserted farm house to be air-lifted from the area. 7-12. Members of 'B' Company move out and board waiting Huey helicopters.
