Audio Letter to home recorded by SP4 Jolliff
Audio Item Number: 1054AU0805
This is a recording made by Specialist 5 George Joliff to his family. The recording starts in mid-sentence. Mr. Joliff begins by commenting on various postcards and letters he has gotten from his family, discussing a variety of news and asking about friends. He outlines his new duty schedule. He will be leaving for Vietnam on 15 July and returning 30 September with leave in Thailand before returning to the states in early November. He will be going to Korea in January 30 until April 30 with leave in Japan, and then returning to Hawaii, and then leave the army to attend college. Specialist Joliff then discusses his assignment in the Army. He is working in the Department of Army Special Photo Office (DASPO) and discusses the training he received and the different projects of DASPO. He is working in the motion picture section of the Department. He says in Vietnam he will mostly be doing public relations work, not actual combat filming. He then discusses more family news and inquiring if any family friends have entered the Army, through draft or otherwise. Mr. Joliff advised that he thought just waiting to be drafted was the best way to get into the military, because he says that everyone ends up in Vietnam anyway, whether they get drafted or volunteer, so it makes more sense to only spend two years in the military. He mentions a 60 Minutes program that focused on Vietnam and what the soldiers thought both prior to going in-country, and those leaving the country after their time in Vietnam. He mentions trips to Waikiki International Market place and the entertainment there.
