Battalion aid station at Charlie 2, between village of Cam Lo and Alpha 4 [Con Thien], Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. The aid station was on the north side of Charlie 2, near north gate for road to Alpha 4 [Con Thien]. 1/77 Armored Battalion, 1/5 Infantry Brigade [mechanized] used this aid station between 01 December 1969 and mid-January 1970. The structure on the left by the west entrance is a shower stall with two 55-gallon barrels containing water. One of the barrels had an immersion heater. The aid station was constructed with stout wood timbers the size of rail road ties. The entrances were wide enough to accommodate a stretcher. [NOTE: The medical aid station was remodeled between mid-January 1970 when 1/77 Armored Battalion returned to Quang Tri Combat Base from Charlie 2 and April 1970.] Kodak Instamatic camera, Kodachrome slide, developed by Kodak, stamped on slide mount in red ink: DEC69P9 number 10. Digital color photograph from slide, printed January 2004. Photographer: Capt. James B. [Jim] Evans, Army Medical Corps, 1/77 Armored Battalion, 1/5 Infantry Brigade [Mechanized]. Battalion aid station on north side of Charlie 2, near gate for north-south road to Alpha [Con Thien]. Photographer was facing north toward Alpha 4. Painted sign is for 1/61 Infantry Battalion, 1/5 Infantry Brigade [Mechanized], headquarters at Quang Tri Combat Base. The bunker was remodeled and reinforced between mid January 1970 when 1/77 Armored Battalion left Charlie 2 and April 1970. The April date is based on my slides printed by Kodak. Reinforcement included above ground timber walls and concrete on roof. Structure on left with two 55 gallon barrels is the shower stall. The shower shows no change compared to earlier photographs. When I [James B. (Jim) Evans] was at Charlie 2 from 01 December 1969 to mid January 1970, the roof was tarp over earth, perhaps over probably PSP. The bunker was built with stout timbers, the size of railroad ties. Date: between January and July 1970 Photographer: 1st Lt. Paul L. Sauer, Army Medical Service Corps, 1/77 Armored Battalion, 1/5 Infantry Brigade [Mechanized], served with 1/77 Armored Battalion from July 1969 to July 1970. KHAM DUC 2 [NOTE: Number sequence of rolls of film is for convenience only and does not necessarily indicate chronologic order.]
28A Lieutenant just in from long range patrol, 'Thousand Yard Stare.' Before the squad came to the medical aid station, an officer told me a squad would be arriving. I was instructed to provide medical care but not ask where they had been. I had only a vague concept of where we were, just the deep boonies. I treated men all the time who had been out in the jungle. If I had asked where they had been, the answer would have been, 'We were out on Hill 260,' which meant nothing to me. As soon as the officer told me not to ask, I knew immediately the squad had been in Laos. The squad belong to SOG [Studies and Observation Group] MACV.
Belonged to SOG.
Date: August 1970.
Photographer: Capt. James B. [Jim] Evans, Army Medical Corps, 91st Evacuations Hospital, Chu Lai, June 1970 to October 1970. TDY with Americal Division units at Kham Duc between 02 and 14 August 1970.
35 mm Kodak Plus X Pan film.
Canon f1.2 FTB 35 mm single lens reflex camera.
Lieutenant from SOG [Search and Observation Group, Military Assistance Command Vietnam] just in from patrol. An unidentified officer came to the medical aid station at Kham Duc and told me to provide medical care for a squad of men returning from a patrol. He ordered me not to ask where they had been. I had only a vague idea about where we were and frequently provided medical car for other men who had been out in the jungle. If I had asked, the men would have told me they had been to Hill 732, a few clicks from Kham Duc. However, when I was ordered not to ask where the patrol had been, I knew immediately they were returning from Laos. This man's eyes had the 'thousand yard stare' of severe fatigue, hypervigilance from the enemy and looking into eternity.

JUST IN FROM LONG RANGE PATROL
THOUSAND YARD STARE AT AID STATION KHAM DUC
This soldier, name unknown, had just returned with a squad from a long-range patrol. Just before the squad came to the aid station, an officer told me to take care of their medical needs but I was not to ask where they had been. I frequently provided medical care for men who had been out on patrol in the jungle and had no reason to ask. When the officer told me not to inquire, I immediately suspected the squad most likely had been in Laos where they were not supposed to be. The Laotian border was about 10 miles from Kham Duc, Vietnam. Officially the United States had no troops in Laos.
