Interview with Jim Hall (James M. Hall, Jr.)

[Number of Pages: 155](USAF) Jim Hall was drafted into the Army in 1940, serving in the Artillery until 1942 when he transferred to the US Army Air Force. He flew B-29s over Japan, and was discharged from active duty in 1945. Recalled in March 1950,Jim worked with the Air Force Special Weapons Group at Albuquerque NM 1952-57 and with the Technical Applications Center 1958-68. In Southeast Asia Jim served with Task Force Alpha in Thailand 1968-69 and at the 7th Airborne Command and Control Center at Udorn and Khorat, 1971-72.

Interview with Robert Taylor Rhea

[Number of Pages: 19](USN) Robert Taylor Rhea was born in Tennessee and graduated from Tennessee Technological University, where participated in the Navy's V-12 program. He was selected for submarine training, and first was assigned to Submarine Squadron 45 in San Diego CA before moving to Submarine Division 343. He joined the USS Haddo at Guam in August 1945. The ship entered Tokyo Bay for the ceremonies marking Japan's surrender. Rhea and other officers from the Haddo walked through Yokohama and central Tokyo on 2 September 1945. Rhea left the Navy in 1946 and moved to the Lubbock TX area in 1947.

Interview with Herbert Schandler

[Number of Pages: 137](USA) Herbert Schandler graduated from the US Military Academy in 1952 and was commissioned in the Infantry. He served in combat roles in Korea and became a special forces expert in Europe. He attended the Command and General Staff College, and was deployed to Vietnam in 1965 as Executive Officer, 2d Bn, 2d Infantry. He then moved to MACV where he worked in the Revolutionary Development Division. Herbert worked at the Pentagon for two years, specializing in Vietnam affairs, and returned to Vietnam in 1969 in command of the 3d Btn/187th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. He retired in 1975, after earning a PhD at Harvard University. He has written 'The Unmaking of a President' (1977), and served on the faculty of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

On June 3, 1969, he was wounded in action (for a second time) and evacuated to Japan and eventually back to the U.S.

Pat served in South Vietnam with the HHC 1/5 Cavalry, 1st Cav Division between November 1968 and April 1969 in Tay Ninh, at LZ Dolly, and other areas as a Logistics and Administrative Officer and Company Executive Officer, and with B Co., 27th Maintenance Battalion, 1st Cav Division, from April to October 1969 as a Logistics Company Commander at Quan Loi (LZ Andy). Pat retired in 1991 as a Lieutenant Colonel after a long and distinguished career including assignments in the Pentagon, as Commander of a maintenance battalion in Germany, and in Berlin as Chief Logistics Officer for U.S. Forces Berlin. She graduated from Coronado High School in Lubbock in 1969, and volunteered for the US Army. After advanced training in helicopter maintenance at Ft Rucker AL, she arrived in Vietnam in January 1970. During her first tour she served with the 240th and 173rd Assault Helicopter Companies. After additional service in the US, she entered a second tour in Vietnam, serving with the 159th and 229th Assault Helicopter Companies between August 1971 and June 1972. Paula is active with the Transgender American Veterans Association.

Interview with Janice J. Carney

[Number of Pages: 140](USA) Janice J. Carney was born (as John) in Cambridge MA and enlisted in the US Army in 1969. After training at Ft Dix NJ, Ft Sam Houston TX, and Ft Polk LA, Janice arrived in Vietnam in July 1970. She was originally assigned to the 666th Transportation Corps near Phu Bai, but moved the the 39th Transportation Bn, becoming the battalion mail clerk and courier. She participated in Lam Son 719, and spent time at FSB Vandergrift. After returning from Vietnam, Janice remained in the Reserves and National Guard for several years. She is active in the Trangender American Veterans Association.

Interview with Ann B. Smith

[Number of Pages: 119](USA) Ann B. Smith was born in Valdosta GA in 1930, and earned a BS in English from Valdosta State University in 1951. She entered the Women's Army Corps in 1951. Ann held posts at Ft McClellan AL; Roanoke VA; Ft Sheridan IL; Ft Riley KS; Bremerhaven, W Germany; Ft McPherson GA; Washington DC; and Ft Leavenworth KS. In 1970 she spent a year as Senior Advisor to the Vietnamese Women's Armed Forces, based at MACV in Saigon. Ann became Secretary of the US Army Missile and Munitions School in AL and the first female instructor since World War II at the Command and General Staff College in KS. Ann's later postings included Commander of the WAC Headquarters at Ft McClellan AL, and Director of the US Army's Casualty and Memorial Affairs Department, 1978-81. She retired as a Colonel, and remaind active as Secretary of the US Army Women's Museum Foundation.

Interview with John Yuill

[Number of Pages: 196](USAF) John Yuill was born in Boswell IN in 1934, and enlisted in the Air Force at the age of 19. After Basic Training at Lackland AFB TX and Advanced Training at the Navigation School, Harlingen AFB TX, John was commissioned in 1955. He served with the Ferry Command until 1958, when he undertook pilot training at Bainbridge GA and Enid OK, and advanced pilot training at Perrin AFB TX. In 1960 he joined the Strategic Air Command as a bomber pilot, flying all SAC aircraft including the B-58 and B-52. John flew from SAC bases at Altus AFB OK and Grissom AFB IN before his two Vietnam tours: 1970-71 flying C-130 aircraft from Ton Son Nhut, and 1972 flying B-52 aircraft from Guam and Utapao, Thailand. John's B-52 was shot down over North Vietnam during Linebacker II, and he was held as a POW in Hanoi until his release in March 1973. John retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, and remains active with POW and USAF veterans' organizations.

U.S. Marine Corps - Interview with John Gary Morris

[Number of Pages: 120](USMC) John 'Gary' Morris was born in 1942 in Houston TX, and attended the University of Dallas before graduating from North Texas University in 1965. He enlisted in the Marines and attended both Boot Camp and Officer Basic School at Quantico VA. Gary served at Camp Lejeune NC, Camp Pendleton CA, and Iwakuni, Japan, before arriving in Vietnam in 1967. He served for 13 months as a squad commander in counter-insurgency operations near 'Happy Valley' outside of Danang, and was promoted to the rank of Captain. Returning to the US, Gary served in the USMC Reserves, retiring in 1999 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He remains active with veterans' organizations and as an artist.

He earned an undergraduate degree in 1964 and was studying pharmacy at the University of Illinois when he was drafted. He entered the Army in 1967, was trained as a medic at Ft Sam Houston TX, and arrived in Vietnam in September 1967. He was assigned to the 12th Evac Hospital at Cu Chi, where he worked as an emergency room medic, including during the Tet Offensive. Returning to the US, Bill completed his pharmacy studies and worked as a pharmacist in Illinois and California until retiring in 1998.

Bender served in-country with the 3/9 Marines and landed at DaNang as part of the first USMC forces to arrive in Vietnam in March 1965. During his second tour Bender served near Hue during the Tet Offensive of 1968, as well as other areas of I Corps before being severely wounded and evacuated for medical treatment. Bender returned to Vietnam in 1970, serving as an advisor to the 5th Vietnamese Marines and taking part in the Cambodian Incursion in the spring of 1970.

She attended the University of Texas at Dallas and entered the Navy at Houston as a nurse, serving from 1945-1947. She was a pioneer in the television industry in southern California, and was a long-time resident of Lubbock, Texas until her death in July 2007.
