Audio Letter to home recorded by SP4 Jolliff
Audio Item Number: 1054AU0805
This is a recording made by Specialist 5 George Joliff to his family. The recording starts in mid-sentence. Mr. Joliff begins by commenting on various postcards and letters he has gotten from his family, discussing a variety of news and asking about friends. He outlines his new duty schedule. He will be leaving for Vietnam on 15 July and returning 30 September with leave in Thailand before returning to the states in early November. He will be going to Korea in January 30 until April 30 with leave in Japan, and then returning to Hawaii, and then leave the army to attend college. Specialist Joliff then discusses his assignment in the Army. He is working in the Department of Army Special Photo Office (DASPO) and discusses the training he received and the different projects of DASPO. He is working in the motion picture section of the Department. He says in Vietnam he will mostly be doing public relations work, not actual combat filming. He then discusses more family news and inquiring if any family friends have entered the Army, through draft or otherwise. Mr. Joliff advised that he thought just waiting to be drafted was the best way to get into the military, because he says that everyone ends up in Vietnam anyway, whether they get drafted or volunteer, so it makes more sense to only spend two years in the military. He mentions a 60 Minutes program that focused on Vietnam and what the soldiers thought both prior to going in-country, and those leaving the country after their time in Vietnam. He mentions trips to Waikiki International Market place and the entertainment there.

Thanksgiving in Vietnam
Moving Image Item Number: 1390VI1638
Color film of Thanksgiving in Vietnam in 1967 or 1968. DASPO men were on TDY and pooled the money to share housing. The sharing allowed the men to travel as needed to document U.S. Army activities. While Abbott was in Saigon, the men rented a home which was nicknamed the 'Villa', this films shows the home and surrounding neighborhood. Film footage includes men playing basketball, playing with dogs and eating turkey dinner.
'Thanksgiving in Vietnam. 1967 or 1968. Since we were on temporary duty assignments, we pooled our money and shared separate housing. This allowed us to travel as we needed to document US Army activities. During my assignment in DASPO, a home was rented in Saigon, which we nicknamed the Villa. This footage shows the villa and its surrounding neighborhood. It also shows Hawes (in OD T shirt), Nickerson (playing with the dogs), Swain, Salas, Delaurier (Frenchy), Friend (OIC), and Hains playing basketball in the yard. A new camera was sent to the team, and the guys were giving it a check-out. Also, footage of us having turkey dinner (and all) cooked by Friend and me (Chuck Abbott).'

Kodachrome II 16mm motion picture film
Museum Object Item Number: 1390museum1348
Seven rolls (camera spool), of Kodachrome II 16mm motion picture film, are from the actual stock that we were issued. Note the expiration date 'June/68'. They are Type A, and have an exposure index of 40. We used it for indoor/outdoor scenes. When outdoors (sunlight), a Wratten #85 filter was to be used for proper color balance, with an exposure index of 25. These speeds (40 & 25) were considered 'fast' during the 1960's.

Div. sits next to a 'Think Safety' sign, an ironic notion considering this is a war zone. This was one of a series of photos I shot with my own camera while on assignment to document the uses of barbed wire tape in the field. It was my first attempt at capturing life in the field for the soldier, rather than the Army's desire to see how the equipment worked. Photo SP5 Bryan K. Grigsby (DASPO)

Color film of the movement of the 11th Brigade from Hawaii to Vietnam aboard the U.S. Naval Ship General William Weigel (T-AP-119). Footage shows the troopson deck doing calisthenics, playing cards, reading, standing at the railing, etc, while the officers were lounging in deck chairs the officer's area. Copy of the original caption sheets can be found in the archival collection.
'100 feet of footage that I (Chuck Abbott) filed on board the US Naval Ship General William Weigel (T-AP-119). On December 7, 1967 Wendel Garet and I were covering the movement of the 11th Brigade from Schofield Barracks, Hawaii to Vietnam. I had hope to film some additional footage for my own collection, but was very busy covering the activities of the Army and Navy personnel aboard ship. We had the run of the ship and it was quite an experience. The footage shows the troops exercising, playing cards, reading, etc and the Officers lunging in the Officer's area.

Moving Image Item Number: 1390VI1649
Color film of training on the Aurican/Sound On Film camera at the U.S. Army Photo School at Ft Monmouth, NJ. People shown in footage include Rich Folden, Gassner, and Dan Farbstein. This 100ft of film was taken by Richard Folden. Rich was a US Army Instructor at the Army's Photo School, Ft. Monmouth, NJ. We were training on the Aurican Sound on Film Camera, each taking turns at the microphone. Rich filmed us with his Bolex 16mm, and was a great instructor (I am the one with the mustache). I am interviewing Gassner, and Dan Farbstein is interviewing me. Rich had given me this footage and after Ft. Monmouth, I wondered what had become of him. He left the Army and spent time in NYC. The few times that I went to NYC with him (Ft. Monmout was about 2 hrs away) he hung around some film students, assisting and learning the craft. I have tracked down a number of the guys from Ft. Monmouth, but no one recalls hearing anything about Rich. This footage was filmed between Nov 1966-April 1967.

Time off while in Vietnam
Moving Image Item Number: 1390VI1650
Color film of Jerry Hains, Ron Deluerier and Chuck Abbott in Vietnam experimenting with anamorphic/scope lens. Part A: This 100 ft roll of film was filmed at the Villa in Vietnam. Jerry Hains, Ron Deluerier (Frenchy - in picture), and I were using the 16mm lense (anamorphic/scope) to see if it would work by holding it up against a regular lens. Also, if holding it in place, and then rotating, what effect would we get. We thought it would make for a special effect for someone who had a few too many drinks...As Frenchy demonstrates in our Hollywood epic. It turned out quit unique for a few guys, finding something to do on our off time. Also see Reel can marked #38A.
