On 29 September 1970 I was a medical attendant for patients being transported from 91st Evacuation Hospital, Chu Lai to Japan. After delivering the patients to a hospital near Tokyo, I returned to Chu Lai, Vietnam via Clark Air Force Base in the Phillipine Islands and Cam Ranh Bay. I was wearing Army khaki uniform when the return flight stopped at Clark Air Force Base in the Phillipines. I remember the mural in the airport of the natives killing Magellan. The airport was air-conditioned, must have been in the 60's I got so cold I had to get outside to warm up during the middle of fthe night lay-over before returning to Vietnam. 14th Aerial Port SQ Passenger Terminal, Cam Ranh Bay

1st Lt. Paul L. Sauer and I made a round trip in the medical platoon jeep from Quang Tri to Cua Viet. A naval base at the mouth of the Qua Viet River transported military vehicles across the river to the sand flats immediately south of the DMZ Medic Grant, Company C, 1/77 Armored Battalion, at Cua Viet, South Vietnam. Grant was injured in a firefight and received a Silver Star for heroism in a ceremony at 1/77 Armored Battalion, Quang Tri Combat Base. At the time of the ceremony he had a bandage on one of his ears. Another soldier attacked him in th EM Club and severely lacerated his ear.

Captain James Schreiber and medics on USO Beach Chu Lai. Dr. Schreiber graduated from University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1968 as did James Evans. Dr. Schreiber came into the Emergency Room 91st Evacuation after a helicopter crash when I was on duty. He had a few bumps and bruises but was otherwise ok. He was fortunate since when the helicopter landed, he was strapped into the helicopter on the down side with aviation fuel pouring over him. He seemed incredibly cool after the helicopter crash. James Schreiber asked me to take this series of photographs on the Chu Lai beach. He requested photographs reenacting raising of flag at Iwo Jima. Dr. Schreiber was battalion surgeon for an Americal Division unit.

Medical corpsman Priest, 1/77 Armored Battalion, 1/5 Brigade [Mechanized]. Priest was a conscientious objector. One evening in spring 1970 when he was pulling charge of quarters [CQ] in Company C, an unknown person rolled a grenade into the office. This was apparently an attempt to maim or kill the company commander. Priest was severely wounded, immediately transferred to the 18th Surgery Hospital in Quang Tri and then evacuated out of country. I have a photo of the remains of the neck of Priest's guitar, bearing witness to the severity of the attack. Fragging in this battalion happened about once a month; typically this was an attempt to kill or maim lifers. Near battalion aid station Quang Tri, Vietnam
