Montagnard Village; Tag; Montagnard, village, rice wine, Red Cross; The first step in developing the 35mm film is, in the dark, to open the film canister, pull out the exposed film, cut it from the winding spindle, and thread it onto stainless steel reels to be placed into the developing tank. If, in this process any of the film touches film the developing chemicals do not correctly process. That is what happened to the center of this negative.

Montagnard Village; Tag; Montagnard, village, rice wine, Red Cross ; Part of the ritual for events or guest, is the sharing of rice wine. Rice is fermented in the clay pots. They are topped of with grass, with a hollow reed extending to the bottom. Notice the stick across the top of the jug. It has a protrusion on its underside. Each guest is expected to drink from the reed. However, it should not be a polite taste. It is expected that enough volume is consumed to lower the level so that the full extent of the protrusion is exposed. Notice the coffee can to the lower left of the scene. This is used to replenish the water level in preparation for the next participant.

Although this, and a number other structures were made of tin, this had to do with the nearness of the American base. The further away the older the tin, soon turning into the natural materials of the area. There were two, at least, issues with the wine drinking. The first was that it was very earthy tasting, and to the non-experienced, might induce a gagging reflex. The second, was that the reed reappeared quite rapidly. If note is taken of the method of getting in, and out of the hooch, a round log with notched became an adventure when it came time to depart. It was not good etiquette to simply fall off of the edge.

Red Cross Women at O.P. 26. It's purpose was to provide early warning of any enemy advances on the base. The staffing squad would spend a week at this site, running night ambush patrols from it. The sandbagged bunker was semi typical, although many were excavated. The horizontal latter was for exercise.
