Patrick Hagopian Collection (2581) Finding Aid
Collection/Finding Aid Item Number: 25810000000
Patrick Hagopian Collection (2581) Finding Aid
The collection consists of approximately nine linear feet of research materials accumulated by Patrick Hagopian while writing his book The Vietnam War in American Memory: Veterans, Memorials and the Politics of Healing. The files are dedicated to Vietnam War memorials with the bulk of the collection centered on fourteen memorials: the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial; the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Angel Fire, New Mexico; the Texas Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Dallas; the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri; the Mississippi Vietnam Veterans Memorial; the Washington State Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Olympia; the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial; the Vietnam War Memorial in the North Shore of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; the Vietnam Veterans of Oregon Memorial; the Rhode Island State Vietnam War Memorial; the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Thetford, Vermont; the New York City Vietnam Veterans Memorial; the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Frankfort; and the Vietnam Women's Memorial in Washington D.C. The collection also includes individual files on memorials from all over the United States, foreign memorials, and local visits of the Moving Wall, a smaller-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

For most of the fourteen memorials mentioned above, Hagopian traveled to the memorial and collected news clippings and publicity pieces about the memorials, photocopies of organizational records such as meeting minutes, press releases issued by the memorials, press packets and commemorative packets given out by the memorials at their dedication ceremonies, concept and architectural drawings, and correspondence regarding the creation and maintenance of the memorials, as well as appreciation letters written to the memorial staff. In the case of the Pittsburgh and Rhode Island memorials, the materials were sent to Hagopian by the memorial planners. Also included are Hagopian's hand written field notes used while conducting research at the various sites, and copies of visitor questionnaires and interviews conducted by Hagopian while at the memorials. The smaller files contain clippings, correspondence, and information that Hagopian collected about numerous other memorials throughout the country, but which were in most instances not featured in the book. A few of the files also include examples of other memorials commemorating the American Civil War and the Persian Gulf War. The materials are dated 1969-2006, predominately 1980-2006.

Also included in the collection is approximately half of a linear foot of materials documenting the Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program (VVLP). The VVLP was a federal government program that existed between July 1981 and July 1984 and was administered under the auspices of ACTION, the federal domestic voluntary service agency. As well as a national organization, the VVLP had 47 local affiliated VVLPs across 41 states, each of which had its own chair and program director. The program was created with the principal goals of 1) acting as a veteran-to-veteran self-help and employment program; 2) encouraging efforts to bring respect and recognition to Vietnam veterans' service through the initiation and support of memorial projects, parades, and other recognition events; and 3) countering negative stereotypes of Vietnam veterans by refuting the media's portrayal of these individuals as psychologically distressed, facing high rates of unemployment, and being prone to criminality and other negative traits, while promoting positive media stories about Vietnam veterans and their service. The officers, staff, and volunteers of VVLPs were heavily involved in projects to create Vietnam veteran memorials. The materials that constitute this segment of the collection include the VVLP's official history; reports; annual press coverage chronicles; national and local officer biographies; Patrick Hagopian's notes from interviews he conducted with VVLP participants (John Fales, William Jayne, Richard Kolb, Marcia Landau, Zack Burkett, Tom Pauken); and bibliographical references. These materials are dated predominately 1969-1971, 1981-1984, 1990-1995, and 2007.
