Faculty of the Participant Training Program correspond with Ph.D. scholarship participant Tran Ngoc Phat from October to December, 1959. They begin by discussing general needs for Phat's Ph.D. program, such as per diem payments, book orders, bill reimbursements, and course schedule. Phat then begins sending letters remarking on his depressed state at Harvard and his homesickness for East Lansing and Vietnam. It appears a break up or strained relationship may be the source of Phat's problems in his letters to Elsie Cunningham. They begin to discuss a matter of financial difficulties and an extension of stay in the U.S., when suddenly Phat appears to wish to return to Vietnam. Gabis responds with a sharply-worded letter, and Phat rethinks his plans to go home.
