The Gamewardens of Vietnam Association Collection contains materials pertaining to the Gamewardens of Vietnam Association which was formed in 1968 to honor the men who served in Task Force 116 in Vietnam denying the Viet Cong the use of the inland waterways. Approximately 12.5 linear feet of materials consisting primarily of transcripts of interviews conducted by Russell Betts and his team at the Rand Corporation with former Viet Cong who rallied to the Government of South Vietnam during the war. The materials also include guidelines for interviewers (including coding sheets); notes; guides to the interviews; questionnaires; memos and correspondence; postcards; reports; articles/clippings; booklets; and personnel records. Topics include Viet Cong motivations, the use of Agent Orange in Vietnam, and Betts' deposition during the 1983 Agent Orange product liability litigation. The materials are dated predominately 1962-1969.

Interviews in collection have been organized by the content of the interview series title and code.

AG/G: Active Influence Within the Viet Cong and North Vietnam Armed Forces.
616 interviews of VC and NVA ralliers, prisoner, VC suspects, and refugees. It explores the respondent's motives in joining or not joining the VC, cohesive and centrifugal forces within the VC, and everyday village life in North Vietnam.

AGR: Attitudes of Refugees Toward Various Apsects of War
84 interviews of refugees from VC-controlled and contested areas throughout South Vietnam in 1965. They explore the attitudes of these people toward the Viet Cong, the GVN, the Americans, and the war in general.

DT: Activities of Viet Cong Within Dinh Tuong Province
A case study of Viet Cong activities within one province. Between 1965 and January 1968 (just before the Tet Offensive), 165 ralliers, prisoners, refugees, and villagers were interviewed to gain information on the operational procedures of the Viet Cong in Dinh Toung Province.

H: Villagers' Impression of Herbicide Operations
42 interviews with South Vietnamese villagers, in 1966, on their impressions of herbicide operations and on the economic and psychological effects of the operations on village food supplies.

K: Elements of Viet Cong and North Vietnam Cohesion
12 interviews with prisoners and ralliers from Viet Cong and north Vietnamese main and local force units in 1967 and 1968. They explore in-depth the interviewees' experiences and attitudes, in an attempt to discover what binds the individual to the NLF cause.

L: Saigon Residents' Attitudes on the War
19 interviews of civilians on the outskirts of Saigon, in 1965, on their attitudes about and reactions to the war.

SF: Reasons for Defection
Interviews of 142 Viet Cong and north Vietnamsese ralliers in 1966-1967 on their reasons for defecting. A shortened version of the AG questionare was used to elicit information on recent military experiences, unit effectiveness, and village conditions.

V: Viet Cong organizational Activities at Hamlet/Village Level
Interviews, conducted in 1967-1968, of 2 Viet Cong prisoners and ralliers, refugees, and ordinary villagers to determine Viet Cong organizational activities at the hamlet and village levels.

The collection consists of approximately 7 linear feet of correspondence, military training manuals, issues of Preventative Maintenance Monthly Magazine, slides (including audio narration), moving images, photographs, and audio letters documenting Timothy Staats' military service with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Staats was in Vietnam from November 1968-December 1969, attached to the 196th Aviation Company of the 1st Aviation Brigade based at Lane Army Heliport near Qui Nhon, South Vietnam. The letters provide an overview of one soldier's experiences throughout his service and have annotations added by Staats, which help to better explain his service. They include information and perspectives about boot camp and training, the day-to-day routine of a soldier in Vietnam, and a number of other situations. The letters and military manuals date from the war era, with some additional materials dating from the 1980s.

The collection consists of letters and a photograph sent by Sergeant Roy Gray to his pen pal Kathleen Williston (nee Arnold). Williston corresponded with Sgt. Gray while she was in high school in response to a letter campaign for soldiers fighting in Vietnam (Operation Mailbag) solicited in late 1965 by the New Orleans Times Picayune newspaper. The two exchanged letters between December 1965 and August 1966.

The collection consists of approximately 9.5 linear feet of materials including books, photographs, slides, artifacts, film, audio, electronic media, notes, periodicals, microfilm, data sheets (spray coordinates, statistics, summaries), memos and correspondence, reports (DAARs, intelligence, target summaries, CHECO), newspaper clippings, magazine articles, journals, studies, oral history transcripts, presentations, guides, commission proceedings, academic papers, forms, bibliographic information, meeting agendas and minutes, website printouts, maps, and official military materials documenting a broad range of topics related to Operation Ranch Hand, the Ranch Hand Association and issues related to herbicidal usage during the Vietnam Conflict. Topics include support for and against the use of herbicides, studies conducted on the use of herbicides, lawsuits against its use, Veterans Administration treatment of Vietnam Veterans, and their objections with the United States government and chemical and germ warfare.

Materials of interest in this collection are the DAAR Reports, or Daily Air Activity Reports for Operation Ranchhand. These daily reports show the map coordinates of spray missions, the type of agent used, number of gallons sprayed, number of hits the spray aircraft sustained during the mission and grid coordinates of the enemy fire, flying conditions experienced during the mission, and if the mission was aborted the reason(s) why. The units mentioned in the reports are the 309th Air Commando Squadron, 315th Air Commando Group, 12th Airborne Command and Control Squadron, and the 12th Special Operations Squadron. Also included with the reports are handwritten notes.

Materials in this collection date from 1960 to 2017 and are primarily organized in their original order.

The collection consists of approximately four and a half linear feet of maps, aerial photographs, informational material about the country, and a Viet Cong banner donated to the archive by Leedom Lefferts who served in Vietnam (Bein Hoa) in the USAF from 1964-1965 as well as the summer of 1968 (Saigon). The majority of maps are 1:25,000 and are of the L8020 series. This collection also consists of topographic maps of Laos and Southeast Asia road maps accumulated by H. Leedom Lefferts, Jr. The Lao topographic maps were purchased from the Lao Geographic Service in the former USAID Vientiane compound in 1990-1991. They were produced by the USSR mapping service as a gift to the Lao Government. The Southeast Asia road maps were prepared by the U.S. Army Map Service and were obtained by Lefferts while he was serving as a USAF officer.

The collection consists of approximately 1.25 linear feet of manuscript material, VHS tapes, DVDs, maps, artifacts, periodicals, newsletters, photographs, electronic media, and slides pertaining to the military service of Lieutenant Colonel Robert Sparks, who served with 3rd Platoon, B Troop, 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry (Armored). He served in Binh Thuan Province, 1969-1970.

The manuscript material includes Sparks' memoir about his Vietnam experience; unit histories; unit rosters; unit and individual orders; press releases and news articles; writings; unit operations logs; memorial service materials; personnel lists; KIA/WIA lists; reunion and other event programs; a booklet entitled Faces of the Famous Fighting Fourth; a booklet entitled 2nd Squadron 1st Cavalry; a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request on Captain Benjamin Robert Bostick; correspondence; change of command ceremony materials; materials pertaining to return trips to Vietnam; Christmas cards; poetry; website printouts; other Vietnam studies and reports; and information on other units associated with the 2-1 Cavalry, including D Troop (Air), which was assigned to the 173rd Airborne Infantry Brigade. Other materials document 2-1 Cavalry reunions from 1992 to 2006 and the 2-1 Cavalry's Operation Iraqi Freedom deployment.

The materials are dated 1967-2008, 2015, and 2021.

The collection also includes two roadside bomb pressure detonators planted by Viet Cong or North Vietnamese Army troops on Highway 1 between Phan Thiet and Song Mao in Binh Thuan Province during Fall 1969 through Winter 1970. They were discovered by troops of the 3rd Platoon, B Troop, 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Division, Task Force South, 1st Field Force during road clearing and security operations.

Approximately one linear foot of draft manuscripts and material used by Rene Defourneaux to write his book The Winking Fox , which documents Defourneaux's service during World War II with the Office of Strategic Service (OSS) where he trained members of the French Resistance behind German lines; and documents for the Deer Mission (July-September 1945) during the Japanese occupation when he parachuted with a U.S.-led team into Indochina/Vietnam to meet with Ho Chi Minh and Vo Nguyen Giap about Allied assisance to remove the Japanese. Approximately 58 linear feet of military documents, correspondence, historical summaries, casualty lists, personal recollections, records inquiries, notes, weather charts, award citations, photographs, scrapbooks, maps, film, audio and electronic media records, periodicals, newsletters and newspapers used by Lawrence McDougal for research for his book on the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, In Country and On Line with the Light Infantry 1966-1970. The collection also contains correspondence, military documents and artifacts from McDougal’s military service.

This collection is divided into two series: Personal/Redcatcher Association; and Government Documents. The first series, Personal/Redcatcher Association focuses on material regarding McDougal’s time in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, the research process into the history of the brigade and his interactions with the Redcatcher Association and other 199th Light Infantry Brigade veterans, which include the History Project handouts that McDougal provided at Redcatcher Reunions. The second series, Government Documents, focuses on the military documents McDougal gathered from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and other repositories. These military documents include Daily Staff Journals from the Brigade and its battalions, After Action Reports, Officers Rosters, and Operational Reports, Lessons Learned. The collection also contains some After Action Reports and Operational Reports from the 1st Infantry Division, the 9th Infantry Division, and the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

The 199th Light Infantry Brigade, also known by their nickname, the Redcatchers, formed in April 1966 at Fort Benning, Georgia and arrived in Vietnam in November 1966. Except for the 5th Battalion, 12th Infantry who were sent to Cambodia in 1970, the 199th Light Infantry Brigade served in the III Corps Area from 1966-1970. In 1967, the Brigade was involved in Operation Fairfax/Rangdong, working with ARVN forces near Saigon. In 1968, the 199th established the Brigade Main Base, Camp Frenzell-Jones. During the Tet Offensive, the Brigade fought in the Bien Hoa province and at the Phu Tho racetrack. Later in 1968 and the first half of 1969, the 199th was stationed west of Saigon in the pineapple plantation region. In September 1968, 199th Brigadier General Frederic Davison became the 3rd African American brigadier general in the history of the United States Army. In the second half of 1969, the brigade served in the Xuan Loc area in the Long Khanh Province. In April 1970, Brigadier General William R. Bond was killed by sniper fire. In September and October 1970, the 199th Light Infantry Brigade withdrew from Vietnam and became inactive.

Approximately half a linear foot of documents, periodicals, newsletters, and a book donated to the archive by Mike Law. The documents were collected by Mike Law during his service with the VHPA and include correspondence with VHPA members, letters to the editor for the Aviator magazine, remembrances, battle accounts, and diaries from VHPA members, and military documents like rosters and the After Action Report for the battle of Ia Drang for the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division. The collection also contains numerous copies of the Hawk magazine for the 1st Aviation Brigade and one copy of the 2017 VHPA calendar title We Were Soldiers Once.... And Young!

The museum object is a guidon for C Troop 2/17 Cavalry acquired by Mike Law after leaving Ft. Campbell for Vietnam. Upon arrival in Vietnam in June 1968, the unit was redesignated as C Troop 7/17 Cavalry.
