United States Economic Assistance to South Vietnam Collection (288) Finding Aid
The collection consists of half a linear foot of three volumes of United States Assistance to South Vietnam, 1954-1975 documenting the major economic assistance activities undertaken by the United States Agency for International Development and its predecessors during the extended period of U.S. involvement in South Vietnam. The volumes were prepared by the Asia Bureau, Office of Residual Indochina Affairs, Viet-Nam Desk and are dated 31 December 1975. Volumes I & II include a summary of materials, while Volume III contains a Bibliography of Official Documents accumulated by the Agency over a period of more than 20 years.

Book titled Lighting Candles: Hospital Memories of Vietnam's Montagnards by Hilary Smith documents the activities from 1971-1973 at Minh Quy Hospital which was established by Dr. Pat Smith of Seattle to care for Montagnards in Kontum in the Vietnamese Central Highlands. Letters written by Hilary Smith to her father during her service at Minh Quy Hospital, including letter exchanges between Hilary and other nurses from the hospital. Also included in the donation is an early manuscript draft of Smith's book Lighting Candles, and photocopies of newspaper articles about Minh Quy Hospital. Also two large maps of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand, a Tacitaal Zone map, and a large collection of photographs, and negatives of Minh Quy Hospital.

Approximately 4.5 linear feet of books and booklets accumulated by David Gustin during his service as an interpreter/translator with the Army Security Agency from 1963-1965 and the Central Intelligence Agency from 1965-1969 in Saigon. Most of the materials cover Vietnamese, English, Russian, and French translations of vocabulary on various topics including intelligence, military units and organizations, literary and esthetics studies, and musicology. One book is a history of Vietnam written in Russian. There are also Vietnamese-French-English dictionaries for idioms and scientific and technological terms put out by both Hanoi and Saigon. Also included in the collection are artifacts and maps of Saigon and Southeast Asia. Also included is a set of photographs that Gustin purchased in Saigon. The materials are dated 1963, 1966-1967, 1969, and 1983.

The collection consists of approximately twelve linear feet of materials documenting Larry Woodson's service with International Voluntary Services (IVS) in Laos from 1964-1971, his later work with USAID, and his subsequent involvement with the IVS Alumni and Air America Association after the war. The materials include documents (including administrative documents, memos, reports, guides on Lao and Thai customs, and correspondence); books; scrapbooks containing Lao currency and stamps; clippings/articles; photographs; slides (600 slides of Laos dated from 1964 - 1975); flags; periodicals; newsletters; newspapers; calendars; audio (including music); video; artifacts; Air Facilities Data Reports on Rescue and SOS SEA losses; Mekong Circle Reunion material; and electronic media.

Items of interest include a copy of the Laos book project proposal (an unpublished manuscript containing reminisces of men and women who served in Laos), Woodson's letters home to his parents, and affidavits and correspondence documenting the asylum seeking efforts of a Laotian family. Also included are correspondence and clippings telling about the lives of USAID people after they returned from Laos. The materials date predominately 1964-1979.

The collection contains news clippings about the fall of Saigon and the return of some Minh Quy Hospital staff to the United States. There is also a letter and typed journals from Peggy Braile and a letter from George 'Humphrey' Christian. There is a copy of Dr. Pat Smith's Newsletter, August-September 1974, and a copy of an article about nurses at the Minh Quy Hospital. A photograph of the hospital staff and visitors [ca.1971-1972], several photographs of hospital staff and Montagnard patients [taken by Dr. John W. Taylor, ca.1972], and a chess set made by Dr. George Christian while imprisoned in Kontum. The majority of the materials date from 1974 to 1975.

The material includes narratives of the members experiences in the Tet Offensive, a description of Alpha Company's role in the Loc Ninh Operation, a copy of a Newsweek article by Kevin Buckley, and biographies of the men who contributed stories to this collection.

The collection also includes a poster featuring a reproduction of a painting by Brian Wood (4th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment) and a commemorative booklet for the 2018 reunion of the Black Lions created by Harvey's children.

The interviews were conducted in the 1980's.

Approximately two linear feet of artifacts collected by J. Michael Stinson while he worked on oil development projects with PetroVietnam in the mid-1990s while he was employed with Conoco Inc. Included in the collection is a brick from the Hanoi Hilton, a framed North Vietnamese propaganda poster, a copy of 'Sorrow of War' by Bao Ninh, and five poonah paper prints of scenes from Hanoi. Also included are photographs depicting Stinson's visit with Do Hien in a Hanoi gallery in 1995. Hien was the artist that created the painting in the Stinson Collection identified as 2418museum4221.

Most of the photographs show planes and refugees arriving at U-Tapao Air Force Base, Thailand after the fall of Saigon, the rest depict major events that occurred at U-Tapao Air Force Base in 1975. The article is from the Smithsonian's Air & Space Magazine and tells the story of the refugees arriving at U-Tapao after the fall of Saigon.

Less than a quarter of a linear foot of documents gathered by students for Westlake High School's annual course dedicated to researching individual Vietnam Veterans killed during the Vietnam War.
The documents include 'Delta Diary: A Day in a Year... A Year in a Life' are stories written by members of Delta Troop, 2/17th Cavalry, 101st Airborne Division who served in Vietnam from 1968-1972 and a tribute dedicated to Frank G. Michulka. Michulka’s tribute includes photographs, letters, newspaper clippings, memorials, and military documents depicting his life and service in Vietnam.

Two electronic media donated by Frances Reynolds to document his service in Vietnam in the Marines from 1966 - 1967. The first item is a CD-ROM containing digital images of CH-37 helicopters. The second item is a DVD with film footage of CH-37 helicopters flying in northern I Corps. It includes footage of the DMZ, Con Thien, the Rockpile, the valley on the way to Khe Sanh, Dong Ha, Hue and Quang Tri.
