U.S. Deeply Involved in the Uncertain Struggle for Vietnam: New York Times article, October 21, 1962

In an October 21, 1962 article to the New York Times, journalist David Halberstam reports on Saigon's attempts to fight off Viet Cong guerrillas, including relocating villagers to fortified hamlets to cut off Communist sources of supply. Halberstam reports that, as one gets closer to the heart of the war, their optimism decreases, and states that Americans are bothered by the lacking sense of urgency in the Vietnamese in the fight against the Viet Cong.
