Trophies of Grace is a documentary featuring seven veterans of the Vietnam War. They all share their experiences in a personal way, and shed light on the harsh realities of war. This video was filmed, directed, and produced by the son of one of the featured veterans. It has a strong Christian message, and is geared not only to honor the Vets of this era, but to help them and their families navigate through the mine field of the post war life.

269th CAB/188th AHC Viet Nam 1967 - 68

The 269th Combat Aviation Battalion "Black Barons" were based at Cu Chi in the III Corp area of operations. The 188th Assault Helicopter Company was in this battalion during May 1967 - March 1968 while based at Dau Tieng. The video contains copy of 8mm film from 1967-1968. It has film from in Vietnam and from the creator’s R&R.

Also contains a letter to Dick Detra regarding the contents of the tape and the significance of it from the one who filmed the contents. The letter touches on unit reunion planning, the contents of the tape and the return of present day soldiers currently deployed versus the welcoming that they received after Vietnam. The letter also notes the significance of the date of the letter, 9 February 2004, which is 39 years after the author was wounded and evacuated from Vietnam during their first tour. This letter can be found in the manuscript material for the collection.

DESERT SKY began when former Army Aviater Captain Eric Simon of the 159th Aviation Brigade arrived at Fort Campbell in February 2003 just two weeks before they shipped off to fight in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Taking his miniDV camera with him, Eric began shooting footage of the deployment and war whenever he could. When a helicopter crew from the brigade’s 5th Battalion was shot down north of Tikrit killing all 4 crewmembers and 2 passengers on board, Eric wanted their story to be told. A week later, two more helicopters collided over the city of Mosul raising their casualty toll to 12. The brigade would never be the same.

The Desert Sky Scholarship Foundation
Proceeds from the purchase of DESERT SKY will benefit a scholarship fund for children of soldiers killed in action while serving in the 159th Aviation Brigade during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

My name is Major Alfred Demailo. I piloted a UH1 Huey Helicopter Gunship with Delta 229th Assault Helicopter Company in the 1st Cavalry Division during my two tours of duty in Vietnam.
Vietnam the way it was is my story – told in my own words and with the 8mm film I took during my years in Nam. It is my personal diary of a most unforgettable time in my life.
I flew hundreds of missions every week – sometimes non-stop for twelve straight hours. We called ourselves “The Smiling Tigers” and we were a tough group of guys.
Climb aboard my helicopter and watch me put the ‘wazoo’ on the enemy. Look down a rocket sight on a search and destroy mission. Follow me on a scary air strike through thick clouds. Feel the rough ride during the rainy season as my door-gunner ‘hoses down’ the jungle below. Meet the men who fought with me as we relax during a rare lull in the action.
This is my personal film diary – my tribute to the thousands of brave men and women who fought along side me in Vietnam. Thank you for letting me share my story with you.
